The book by a methodologist and philosopher Uladzimir Matskevich has been presented in Warsaw by his daughter Nadzeya Luchanok.
On December 16, the e-book by Uladzimir Matskevich “Answering for yourself. Notes of an ill-tempered philosopher” was presented in Warsaw.
The book was based on the author’s reflections published on Facebook. Everyone present at the event could download the book in electronic format.
On August 4 this year, police detained Uladzimir Matskevich, a well-known Belarusian philosopher, methodologist, and presenter of a program on Belsat. He was charged with organizing actions that grossly violate public order, or active participation in them (Article 342 of the Criminal Code). On August 6, human rights activists recognized him a political prisoner.
Uladzimir Matskevich was born on May 14, 1956, in the Irkutsk region of Russia. His grandfathers and parents, natives of the Hrodna region, were repressed during Stalin’s time and met in exile. The family returned to the Hrodna Region only in 1966.
In Hrodna, Matskevich finished high school. After serving in the army, he entered the Leningrad State University to study psychology, from which he was sent to Vilnius. He lived and worked in Leningrad for a while. Then he was employed at the Liepaja Pedagogical University. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, he returned to Belarus, where he taught and reformed the education system. Uladzimir Matskevich also worked on Belarusian television.
Since 2004, Uladzimir Matskevich has been basically banned from the profession because of his political views. But he was engaged in social activities: the Flying University appeared thanks to his efforts.
Uladzimir Matskevich was politically active. During the elections of 1994 he offered his assistance to Stanislau Shushkevich and Zyanon Paznyak. He took part in the creation of the UCP, “Charter’97”. He was the first head of the council of the international consortium “EuroBelarus”.
In 2012, Uladzimir Matskevich joined Belsat’s team and became the host of the program “Talk of the Day”.
Uladzimir Matskevich is in the detention center on Valadarski Street in Minsk.
